Yemen, Icelandic REI sign document to invest in generating electricity by geothermal

SANA'A, April 06 (Saba)- General Corporation for Electricity signed on Sunday a document with Icelandic Reykjavik Energy Invest company (REI) to generate electricity.

Under the document, the company would conduct a study for the sources of geothermal at al-Lisi mountain in Dhmmar governorate and then to start drilling works in the location.

The company would invest in setting up the first geothermal station in the mountain at a capacity of 100 Mgw after finalizing the study by the end of August, 2008, according to the document.

Then, the two sides held a meeting co-chaired by Minister of Electricity and Energy Mustafa Bahran and his Icelandic counterpart Ossur Skarphéinsson over mutual cooperation between the two countries in field of energy.

Bahran briefed the Iceland side on renewable sources of energy in Yemen in the topic of which is solar power, geothermal and wind power.

He pointed out to efforts of Yemen to utilize these sources to generate electricity to meet the growing needs for energy in the country.

Bahran also affirmed the importance of benefiting from the Icelandic experiences in this regard as it is number one in making use of geothermal.

For his part, the Icelandic minister voiced readiness of his country to help Yemen make use of this renewable energy.

The document was signed by chairman of the corporation Abdul-Muti al-Juneid and board chairman of the Iceland company Gudmundur Sigurjonsson.
