Beijing - Saba:
The Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than 1,300 new cases of Chikungunya fever were recorded in Guangdong Province, southern China, within a week, half the number recorded in the previous week.
The center said in a statement: "From August 3, 2025, to August 9, 2025, 1,387 new cases of Chikungunya fever were reported in the province," according to Russia Today.
Kang Min, a senior infectious disease expert at the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the number of new Chikungunya fever cases reported in the province showed a "continuous downward trend."
Previously, 2,892 new cases of Chikungunya fever were reported in Guangdong Province from July 27 to August 2. Most of the cases, 2,770, were detected in Foshan.
It is worth noting that no serious cases or deaths have been reported from this disease. Most of the cases were recorded in Foshan (1,212), while 103 cases were recorded in Guangzhou.
Chikungunya fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of blood-sucking insects. The disease is primarily transmitted by two species of mosquitoes: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which also transmit other viral fever pathogens, including yellow fever and dengue fever.
Chikungunya fever's natural areas of distribution are tropical regions of Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and the islands of the Indian Ocean, where seasonal outbreaks occur annually, as well as Mexico and Guatemala.
