Discussion on ways to preserve Al-Mahwit Water Basin
[Wed, 30 Jul 2025 18:29:35 +0300]

Al-Mahwit – Saba:

The Al-Mahwit Water Basin Committee discussed today, in a meeting chaired by the Secretary-General of the Local Council of the governorate, Dr. Ali Al-Zaykum, ways to preserve the basin and protect it from depletion and random drilling.

The meeting, attended by the Deputy Governor Abdul Salam Al-Dhamari, approved the formation of a committee from the Water Resources Authority and relevant entities to survey wells, determine rehabilitation needs, and activate regulatory roles. The committee also decided to prohibit moving drilling rigs to sites without a license and the supervision of a technical engineer to monitor drilling operations.

Several applications submitted to the committee for licenses to drill, deepen, or maintain new wells in the basin area were reviewed.

During the meeting, which included the Directors of Finance Abdulrab Al-Maqdashi, the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation Abdulghani Al-Qutmah, Social Affairs Dr. Yahya Al-Tayari, Assistant Director of Security for Security Affairs Colonel Mohammed Al-Haj, and other committee members, the Director of the General Water Resources Authority Branch, Ayash Al-Talbi, presented a report on the authority’s activities. The report included data on wells and drilling license applications.

Al-Talbi discussed the efforts made to prevent random drilling, challenges faced, ways to overcome them, the level of implementation of previous meeting decisions, and the branch’s work plan for the coming period. He emphasized that preserving water resources is everyone’s responsibility and requires concerted efforts to strengthen the role of the Water Resources Authority and enforce regulations governing drilling activities.

Dr. Al-Zaykum stressed the importance of enforcing the law to preserve groundwater by preventing the issuance of drilling licenses in areas threatened by drought.

He also underscored the need for unified coordination between the local authorities, the General Water Resources Authority, the Local Water Corporation, security services, and relevant entities to regulate drilling activities and stop random well drilling.
