The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of Hamas, as a “major crime” and a “flagrant violation” of international law, national sovereignty, and Iran’s territorial integrity. The statement was issued on the first anniversary of Haniyeh’s death in Tehran.
The ministry described Haniyeh as “a brave fighter and a key leader in the struggle against Zionist occupation,” and emphasized that his legacy, along with other martyrs of the resistance, would continue until the Palestinian people achieve self-determination and liberation from occupation.
It reiterated that Haniyeh was assassinated while attending the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as an official guest, and that the strike constituted a blatant breach of Iranian sovereignty.
The ministry added that the assassination is part of Israel’s broader campaign of colonial extermination targeting Palestinian leaders, and called for international accountability, demanding the prosecution and punishment of the perpetrators.
The statement concluded by holding the U.S. and certain Western nations complicit in the crimes of the Israeli occupation through their ongoing political and military support. Iran reaffirmed its right to self-defense and urged global action to stop the genocide in Gaza and support the oppressed Palestinian population.
