Kuala Lumpur - Saba:
Ceasefire talks between Thailand and Cambodia began today, Monday, in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, mediated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, according to Malaysian media.
The closed session was chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in his capacity as Chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
The meeting aims to ease border tensions between the two neighboring ASEAN member states.
The talks come amid growing concerns over recent military activity along the Thai-Cambodian border.
In a show of support, U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan and Chinese Ambassador Ouyang Yujing also attended, serving as co-mediators in the peace dialogue.
Both Washington and Beijing urged restraint and encouraged a diplomatic resolution to the growing tensions.
A joint press conference is expected to be broadcast live later this evening, during which the three leaders are likely to announce the results of the meeting.
