Ottawa - Saba:
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand confirmed on Wednesday that Canada will never join the United States as a 51st state.
In an interview with Japanese television channel NHK, the minister said, "Canada will never become the 51st state of the United States. Period."
The channel explained that the minister's sharp reaction came in response to similar proposals previously announced by US President Donald Trump.
President Trump has repeatedly expressed his view that many Canadians support their country becoming the 51st state of the United States.
He believes that such a union would bring Canada economic stability and protect it from external threats, which, according to Trump, come particularly from Russia and China.
For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly emphasized that his country will never join the United States in any way.
At the end of last June, the US president reiterated this idea, saying that Canada is completely dependent on the United States, while the United States is not dependent on Canada.
