FAO: Only 4.6% of Gaza lands cultivatable

FAO: Only 4.6% of Gaza lands cultivatable

Rome - Saba:

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced today, Tuesday, that the Israeli genocide in Gaza has wiped out agriculture in the besieged Gaza Strip, explaining that "only 4.6 percent of Gaza's land remains arable."

"FAO is currently unable to deliver anything, not even a single seed or bag of fertilizer to Gaza," said the FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa in a statement.

He added, "While we remain ready to do so once humanitarian access is restored, we are simultaneously exploring new ways to support Gaza's farmers, which is crucial to boosting food security now."

FAO stated that, according to an analysis conducted last March, "only 4.6 percent of Gaza's land remains arable" as a result of the Israeli war of extermination.

"With arable land scarce, those who have access have resorted to cultivating on temporary plots among tents or in the rubble of damaged homes," the Organization added.

The organization noted that "as the crisis continues to devastate the agri-food sector in the Gaza Strip, it recently supported 200 farmers in Rafah and Khan Younis to improve the use of available land for the cultivation of the most needed staple crops."
