Moscow - Saba:
Commenting on French President Emmanuel Macron's statements regarding the illegality of the US strikes on Iran, Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov stated that the positions of European leaders have always been inconsistent with international law.
Pushkov wrote on his Telegram channel, according to Sputnik: "Macron harshly attacked (US President Donald) Trump, saying his strikes on Iran were illegal, but this sarcasm was limited. Macron said that France agrees with the goals of the United States. In other words, if the United States acts outside the law on the world stage, this is illegal, but acceptable to the West."
He continued: "(German Chancellor Friedrich) Merz thinks the same way. The position of European leaders has always been contrary to international law."
He added: "Regarding the issue of World War III, some media professionals enjoy talking about its beginning, as if they are eagerly awaiting it. Some of them, who lack sufficient patience, have even spotted the beginning of this war in the Middle East. But is there any basis for this? World wars have been characterized by the participation of a large number of countries from different continents, in addition to the massive armed forces of at least two sides."
According to Pushkov, during the First and Second World Wars, alliances of countries fought in Europe, Africa, and Asia, but in the Middle East, we don't see anything like that now. He explained that "there are no longer large-scale alliances, and the nature of warfare has changed."
The Russian senator pointed out that "Israel and Iran are fighting, exchanging threats, missile attacks, and bombs, but neither is capable of occupying the other."
Pushkov said, "The United States joined the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, but it is unlikely that it would be willing to send its army there and occupy Iran. But even if it came to that and the Americans made such an attempt, firstly, the success of the United States is not guaranteed, and secondly, this would not be the beginning of a third world war. It would be a regional war between the United States and Israel against Iran and its close allies or pro-Iranian formations in Iraq."
According to the Russian senator, given the limited scope of the confrontation, the Middle East cannot become the "cradle" of World War III.
Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities "have no legal basis, but France agrees with them in their goal."
