A joint meeting of the committee assigned by Sana’a province and the General Authority for Water Resources discussed the obstacles related to the random drilling of wells in the province and ways to reduce water depletion.
The meeting, attended by Sana’a province’s Secretary-General Abdulqadir Al-Jilani and the head of the General Authority for Water Resources and Facilities, Engineer Hadi Quraya, addressed the challenges facing the authority’s branch in the province, particularly those concerning uncontrolled well drilling.
The meeting, which included members of the governorate’s local council Abdul Salam Al-Jaifi and Ali Al-Suhayli, deputy governors for services and investment sectors Fares Al-Kahali and Yahya Jamman, as well as Water Resources Authority officials Engineer Abdulkarim Al-Sufyani, Deputy Security Director Brigadier Ahmed Al-Hadi, and Sana’a Water Resources Branch Director Engineer Mustafa Al-Shahari, reviewed ways to overcome these challenges.
The meeting examined a report on the collection of well-drilling fees, irregularities in procedures related to drilling and deepening permits, and measures taken against violators within the province.
During the meeting, which was attended by local council members Hajar Ahmed and Taher Al-Adhari, as well as the province’s financial resources director Abdu Kathir, Quraya presented the projects implemented by the authority, the difficulties hindering their progress, and future visions to address imbalances in integrated water resource management. He emphasized efforts to achieve water security and prevent depletion and pollution, in line with the directives of the Revolution Leader, Sayyid Abdulmalik Badruddin Al-Houthi.
Quraya stressed the importance of utilizing rainwater and flood harvesting in projects such as dams, lakes, and barriers, based on technical studies prepared by the authority. He highlighted the need for cooperation and coordination between the authority, local government, security agencies, regulatory bodies, and district councils to stop random drilling, control violators, and reduce water depletion.
The meeting, attended by the governorate’s technical secretariat director Mohammed Sharqan and operations director Ibrahim Al-Fasih, approved the formation of a committee to develop a mechanism for regulating the control of illegal drilling rigs and preventing random drilling. It also emphasized banning the movement of drilling rigs without permits issued by the authority’s branch.
Participants stressed the importance of enhancing oversight, coordinating with relevant authorities, and strengthening measures against violators, including rig owners, to reduce groundwater depletion. They also emphasized implementing solutions for groundwater recharge and minimizing its overuse.
In the meeting, Secretary-General Al-Jilani affirmed the local authority’s commitment to supporting the Water Resources Authority’s efforts to preserve and develop water sources, regulate artesian well drilling, and prevent random drilling to protect the Sana’a basin.
