Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that Ukraine must recognize the results of the referendums in four new regions of the Russian Federation, noting that this stems from the will of the people living there.
Putin said in an interview with Sky News Arabia: "It is important that we proceed from the will of the residents of these regions and recognize them, because this is what we call democracy."
Putin continued: "In this context, I say that Ukraine needs to recognize the results of the referendums held in four known regions. They must be recognized as a fait accompli, because failure to do so means the possibility of a resumption of armed conflict."
Putin emphasized that many Ukrainians want to maintain friendly ties with Russia.
Putin emphasized that "there should be no Nazi elements in the Ukrainian leadership, and Kyiv must pursue its national interests."
Putin explained: "Third parties are not seeking to end the conflict, but rather to exploit Ukraine for their own interests. Ukraine deserves a better fate and should not be a tool in the hands of third parties working against Russia."
Putin emphasized on Friday that his country is not seeking Ukraine's surrender, but rather recognition of the situation that has developed on the ground.
