Abuja - Saba:
At least 200 people have died and 700 are missing due to flooding that struck Niger State in central Nigeria three weeks ago, caused by flash floods.
The Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, said in a statement on Thursday that more than 700 people are still missing and have not yet been located. He confirmed that 207 bodies have been recovered after the floods destroyed approximately 400 homes and displaced more than 3,000 people.
Rescue teams continue to search for the missing three weeks after flash floods inundated the city and its surroundings, more than 300 kilometers east of the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
The National Meteorological Agency has warned of the possibility of flash floods in most of Nigeria's 36 states during the rainy season.
Floods, typically caused by heavy rains, wreak havoc every year, killing hundreds of people in the West African country.
In 2024, more than 300 people were killed and more than a million others displaced in at least 34 Nigerian states during the worst rainy season in decades.
