Los Angeles - Saba:
British photographer Nick Stern, 60, who has lived and worked in the United States for 18 years, was shot in the leg by police during a protest in Los Angeles against US government immigration policy and underwent surgery, Stern told British media.
Stern told The Times: "I had a press card around my neck, a large camera, and a video camera... I was trying to be visible to the media. Then I felt a sharp pain in my leg. I collapsed immediately, and I felt a huge swelling. Protesters came to help, and I was saying, 'Sit me down, sit me down...' Then I lost consciousness."
Stern believes the bullet that struck him was fired by local police.
The British photographer added, "They were supposed to fire at the ground in front of people, not at individuals, but that bullet hit me directly. There was no group to disperse at that moment, and I can't explain why they fired at all."
According to the newspaper, doctors believe Stern was hit in the thigh by a 14mm high-velocity sponge-tipped bullet.
