Federal health authorities in the United States have announced a salmonella outbreak that has sickened dozens of people in seven states in the West and Midwest.
The August Egg Company stated that it had recalled quantities of organic brown eggs and brown eggs from open farms, distributed between February and May, due to potential contamination with salmonella bacteria.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 79 people in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming have been infected with the salmonella strain associated with these eggs, with 21 of them hospitalized.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. Most people recover within a week. However, the infection can be serious for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, which may require hospital treatment.
