Washington - Saba:
US President Donald Trump has reiterated his warning to Iran against proceeding with uranium enrichment on its territory, stressing that his country "will not allow it."
In statements reported by US media aboard Air Force One while en route to Jersey on Friday evening, Trump explained that "Washington will have to take different measures if Iran continues to enrich uranium," without specifying the nature of these measures.
Trump added: "They will not enrich... and if they enrich, we will have to take action and take a different direction," indicating the possibility of adopting a policy far from negotiations.
The US President stressed that he does not want escalation, but he will not hesitate to take the necessary measures, concluding his remarks by saying: "We will have no other choice... We will not allow enrichment."
These statements came two days after Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, rejected a US proposal to establish a "regional consortium" (a grouping of two or more countries working together) to manage uranium enrichment, raising questions about the fate of the negotiations between the two countries. The sixth round of US-Iranian negotiations was expected to be held soon, but Khamenei deemed the US proposal contrary to Tehran's interests.
