The Speaker of the Russian Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, addressed a letter to the President of the German Parliament, as well as to the leaders of the parliamentary blocs, regarding the "sarcastic" statements made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the results of World War II.
Sputnik reported today, Saturday, that this letter came, according to the Russian Duma on Friday, following Merz's statements on Thursday during a press conference with US President Donald Trump.
Merz said, "As a result of the Normandy landings, the United States ended the war in Europe and liberated Germany from Nazism, and is therefore able to 'do something' to end the Ukrainian conflict."
Neither side addressed the decisive role of the Soviet Union in defeating Nazi Germany.
Commenting on these statements, the Speaker of the Russian Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, addressed an official letter to the President of the German Bundestag and to the leaders of the five political blocs in the German parliament.
The statement read, "The cynical remarks made by the German Chancellor when discussing the results of World War II distort the history of the victory over Nazism."
In his speech to the German parliament, Volodin said the German Chancellor's statements in support of Kiev, which deliberately targets peaceful cities and commits terrorist attacks, appear cynical.
He added, "The German leadership is creating conditions for aggravating the situation and provoking clashes with Russia."
Last May, Russia celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, the victory achieved by Russia and the other Soviet republics over the remnants of the Nazi forces that invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941.
The Red Army, the army of Soviet Russia, continued to pursue Nazi German forces until the fall of Berlin, the capital of the Third Reich, on May 9, 1945.
