US President Donald Trump has announced that a US government delegation will meet in London on June 9 with a Chinese delegation to resolve trade disputes between the two countries.
Trump indicated that the US delegation will include Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jameson Greer.
Trump wrote on the Truth Social website: "I am pleased to announce that Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Ambassador Jameson Greer will meet in London on Monday, June 9, 2025, with Chinese officials to complete a trade deal.
The meeting is expected to go well."
The upcoming talks come as Washington and Beijing attempt to ease trade tensions that escalated after the United States raised tariffs on Chinese goods and Trump's statements about the need to "reset" trade policy toward China.
Trump's decision to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports took effect last Wednesday morning. The new decision raises US tariffs on imported iron and steel from 25% to 50% of the import value, as Trump seeks to correct what he calls a trade imbalance while strengthening the domestic steel and aluminum industry in the United States.
At the same time, steel and aluminum products imported from Britain will be exempt from the increase, remaining subject to a 25% tariff, according to the White House announcement, in light of the trade agreement recently reached between Washington and London
