Dhamar - Saba:
Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, Dr. Radwan Al-Rabai, along with the Director-General of the Public Foundation for Seed Multiplication, Engineer Abdullah Al-Wadaei, inaugurated on Tuesday the harvest season for winter wheat seeds for the 2024/2025 agricultural season in the farmlands of Dhamar and Yareem plains.
During the launch, Minister Al-Rabai described this agricultural season as promising, given the high productivity of some wheat seed varieties cultivated in the central highlands. One variety achieved a yield of approximately 4 tons per hectare—a record for such regions.
"These positive results open broad prospects for expanding wheat cultivation in highland areas, particularly with the improved varieties produced by the Public Foundation for Seed Multiplication, which have proven adaptable to Yemen’s diverse climatic conditions," Al-Rabai stated.
Despite limited resources, he noted that the Foundation continues its efforts in seed preservation and supporting food security through horizontal and vertical expansion of strategic crop cultivation.
For his part, Engineer Al-Wadaei confirmed that this season is pivotal, though farmers in the province were unable to fully benefit due to scarce rainfall.
He highlighted that the "Saba" wheat variety, planted on 200 hectares under contract farming with 75 farmers, achieved encouraging results, signaling a promising summer season with expanded cultivation of wheat, corn, and legumes.
Al-Wadaei also revealed that the Foundation’s experts have successfully developed four new improved wheat varieties, tested in Dhamar and Yareem plains, with yields ranging between 5 to 6 tons per hectare. In favorable agricultural regions like Al-Jawf, productivity is expected to exceed 8 tons.
He attributed these achievements to the directives of Revolution Leader Sayyed Abdulmalik Badruddin Al-Houthi and efforts to overcome blockade challenges, emphasizing that the Foundation now possesses surplus seed varieties suitable for cultivation across various provinces.
