The Ministry of Interior of Dagestan has reported that three traffic police officers were killed in an armed attack on their vehicle in the capital, Makhachkala, on Monday.
The ministry said in a statement that at approximately 2:20 PM, a traffic police patrol in the city of Makhachkala was attacked by unknown assailants, which, according to preliminary information, resulted in the deaths of three police officers.
The statement added that the perpetrators fled in a stolen police vehicle, and that an operation is underway to arrest the attackers.
Dagestan President Sergei Melikov explained that, according to preliminary information, the incident occurred when Interior Ministry personnel attempted to stop a vehicle, but the driver refused to comply and opened fire.
Authorities later confirmed the death of two attackers, amidst estimates that a total of four gunmen were involved in the attack on the patrol.
The Republican Clinical Hospital in Makhachkala later confirmed that it had received a number of people injured in today's attack.
