Srinagar - (Saba):
Indian security forces launched a massive search operation in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir on Wednesday, a day after a deadly armed attack that killed 26 tourists.
The attack occurred on Tuesday when gunmen emerged from the forests and opened fire on crowds at a popular tourist site in the Pahalgam area, about 90 kilometers from Srinagar, the summer capital of the region, according to local Indian media. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a separate incident, the Indian army announced on Wednesday a "heavy exchange of fire" with militants, who it said were part of an "infiltration attempt" across the disputed border from Pakistan.
The army added that "two militants were eliminated."
According to a casualty list released by a local hospital and verified by police, all the victims were men, most from different parts of India, with the exception of one tourist from Nepal.
