London - Saba:
Britain's Heathrow Airport announced on Friday that it would close until midnight after a major power outage caused by a fire at an electricity substation that supplies the airport.
"For the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow Airport will be closed until 11:59 PM on March 21," the airport said in a post on its website, advising passengers not to travel.
An airport spokesperson told Reuters that firefighters were dealing with the situation, but it remains unclear when stable power will be restored.
The spokesperson added that they expect significant disruption to traffic in the coming days.
Eurocontrol, which manages air traffic control operations across Europe, said on its website that no flights were being allowed to arrive at Heathrow Airport due to the power outage and that plans were in place to divert flights.
According to travel data company OAG, Heathrow was the world's second busiest airport in 2024.
