The Kremlin on Thursday said the Russian military informed Russian President Vladimir Putin of the start of the final phase of the operation to liberate the territory of the Russian Kursk Oblast from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Sputnik quoted Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that the command of the Northern Group of the Russian Armed Forces informed Russian President Vladimir Putin of the start of the final phase of the operation to liberate the territory of the Kursk Oblast from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Peskov said, "During his visit to one of the command centers in Kursk Oblast, Putin heard reports from the commander of the Northern Group of Forces and the deputy commander of the Northern Group of Forces, who informed the Supreme Commander of the operation about the progress of the operation and the entry of the final phase of the operation to liberate the territory of the Kursk Oblast from the militants who had infiltrated it."
Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Vladimir Putin held a meeting yesterday, Wednesday, at one of the Kursk Oblast command centers. The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov, informed the head of state that the Russian Armed Forces had liberated more than 1,100 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk border region during offensive operations, representing more than 86% of the area previously occupied by the enemy.
Gerasimov stated that the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk border region of Russia exceeded 67,000 people. He also reported that Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters were surrendering, seeing the desperate situation in the Kursk direction. Russian forces had captured 430 Ukrainian militants.
Gerasimov added that the Ukrainian Armed Forces group in Kursk region was isolated and was being systematically destroyed. He noted that Russian soldiers had crossed from the Kursk border region in certain areas and entered Sumy region.
Earlier, the commander of the Paratrooper Battalion of the 11th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade, operating as part of the Russian Northern Group, said that the Russian flag had been raised in the central square near the Sudja administration building and that the city center had been retaken from Russian control.
