Washington - Saba:
US President Donald Trump accused Canadian authorities of "cheating American farmers" by imposing high customs duties on American agricultural exports, especially dairy products.
This accusation came in a post on the "Truth Social" platform in the context of Trump's criticism of Canada's protectionist trade policies, considering them "unfair" and restricting access to its markets, according to the Russian RT channel and the Novosti agency.
Trump pointed out that Canada maintained high customs duties in 2024 on a number of American goods, including products from "protected" sectors such as dairy.
He explained that Canadian duties on some American dairy products, which exceed the specified quotas, reach 243% on milk, 298% on butter, and 245% on cheese.
He described these duties as "part of a long-standing Canadian policy to protect domestic producers from foreign competition, especially in the agricultural sector."
Under the terms of the United States-Canada-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (USMCA), many goods are traded between these countries duty-free, provided they meet rules of origin and other standards, however, Trump has noted that Canada still imposes high tariffs on some US products.
The US has imposed a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods, except for oil and energy, which are subject to a 10% tariff, effective March 4, 2025.
In response, Canada has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the US tariffs and announced retaliatory measures on US goods.
