Washington - Saba:
On Friday, US Border Police officers placed barbed wire between the city of El Paso, Texas, and its Mexican neighbor, Ciudad Juarez.
US media reports indicated that Customs and Border Protection officers conducted security drills near the international bridge linking the two cities.
This comes three days before Donald Trump is inaugurated as President of the United States of America. These drills caused traffic to be disrupted for 40 minutes.
Ciudad Juarez is one of the points through which the United States allows immigrants to submit asylum applications using the "CPP One" application. This mechanism, which Trump promised to abolish, has helped reduce the number of people crossing the border illegally.
After winning the elections, Trump said he wanted to declare a national emergency to implement his plans for mass deportation of immigrants, and that he intended to resort to the armed forces in this context.
For her part, Kristi Noem, who was appointed by Trump to head the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for monitoring immigration, said: "The number one threat to our internal security is the southern border" with Mexico.
