New York - Saba:
The United Nations General Assembly is discussing, in its emergency special session, today, Wednesday, a resolution to support UNRWA submitted by Jordan, Indonesia, Algeria, Guinea, Qatar, Kuwait, Qatar, Lebanon, Malaysia, Egypt and the State of Palestine.
The draft resolution affirmed the General Assembly's support for the mandate of UNRWA in all its fields of operations, which are Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the occupied Palestinian territories.
The draft resolution condemns the legislation adopted by the Israeli Knesset on 28 October 2024, and calls upon the Government of Israel to abide by its international obligations, respect the privileges and immunities of the Agency and fulfil its responsibility towards it, and to allow and facilitate the full, rapid, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance in all its forms to the entire Gaza Strip, and throughout the Strip, including the provision of essential services that are urgently needed by the civilian population.
The draft resolution warns against any attempts to dismantle or reduce the Agency’s operations and mandate, noting that “any cessation or suspension of its work would have serious humanitarian consequences for the millions of Palestine refugees who depend on the Agency’s services, and would have repercussions on the region.”
The draft resolution stresses the need to provide compensation, in accordance with international law, for all losses, damages and destruction caused to the Agency in the occupied Palestinian territory, and calls upon “the Secretary-General to conduct the necessary assessments to this end.”
