At least three crew members of an ambulance helicopter were killed while the helicopter was on its way to transport a patient in the US state of Kentucky.

Kentucky State Police said in a press release last night: The accident was reported on Monday in the city of Owenton near the state's Highway 22.

A helicopter belonging to the Air Evac Life Team air ambulance organization crashed, killing the three people on board.

Police said they are investigating the death and the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.

The Air Evac LifeTeam said in a statement on social media: The Grant County-based crew was on its way to transport a patient when the accident occurred.
