PARIS September 07. 2024 (Saba) - Paris and other French cities saw widespread demonstrations on Saturday demanding the removal of President Emmanuel Macron, following his decision to appoint former right-wing minister Michel Barnier as prime minister.
The protests, organized by left-wing groups, are a reaction to Macron’s choice to sideline the left-wing coalition that won the most seats in last July’s contentious legislative elections.
The left, particularly the “France Insoumise” party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, views Barnier’s appointment as a disregard for the voters' will and a "power grab."
Authorities anticipated tens of thousands of people to join the protests, with demonstrators gathering in Paris's Place de la Bastille and other cities across 150 locations nationwide.
The protests featured slogans denouncing Macron’s actions, such as “No to Macron's imposition of force,” “No to stealing the elections,” and “No to ignoring the people's choice.”
