UNRWA: Situation in Gaza Strip is catastrophic & hundreds of thousands forced to flee daily

RAMALLAH August 27. 2024 (Saba) - Two officials from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have reiterated that the situation in Gaza Strip is “catastrophic” and that the area in which people are confined in the Strip is “very small,” with more evacuation orders being issued for areas across Gaza over the past two weeks.

UNRWA spokesperson in Gaza, Louise Wateridge, and UNRWA’s Senior Deputy Field Director, Wissam Rose, gave a video briefing from Deir al-Balah in central Gaza last night, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, citing the organization’s official website.

In turn, the first deputy field director of UNRWA confirmed that "the recent series of evacuation orders reduced the humanitarian area declared by the Zionist entity to only 11 percent of the entire Gaza Strip, in reality it is sand dunes and crowded areas, where people are crowded and doing everything they can to survive."

He warned of the environment in which polio could spread, referring to "children suffering from malnutrition, a destroyed health sector, extremely poor water , sanitation services , conditions, people living among garbage and pools of sewage, feeling stressed , anxious and their immune systems weakened."

The UN official also confirmed that they are now directing their efforts to the success of the polio vaccination campaign, which will begin next Saturday and targets about 640,000 children, as 40 percent of these children will receive vaccines from UNRWA, which is a major player in that campaign.
