Russian scientists develop algae-based absorber for radioactive materials

MOSCOW August 22. 2024 (Saba) - Scientists from Perm State University of Applied Research in Russia have created a novel absorbent from brown algae found in the Black Sea.

This innovative material is designed to extract heavy metals and radioactive substances from both water and the human body.

Ekaterina Spetneva, a student in the university's Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, shared details about the breakthrough on Thursday.

Spetneva explained that the team studied three types of brown algae, which are perennial organisms thriving in the rocky substrates of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

The researchers identified several toxic metals and radioactive elements that pose significant health risks, including cadmium, copper, arsenic, nickel, mercury, lead, zinc, and chromium. Of particular concern is radioisotopes like radium, which have a half-life exceeding 30 years, leading to prolonged radioactive contamination following incidents such as nuclear plant accidents.
