SANA'A August 18. 2024 (Saba) - A meeting chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Meftah on Sunday focused on coordinating efforts to boost agricultural development and mitigate flood damage in various governorates and directorates.
The discussion, which included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Administration, Local and Rural Development Mohammed al-Madani, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources Dr. Radwan al-Rubai, and Secretary-General of the Agricultural Cooperative Union Mohammed al-Qahoum, underscored the need for a collaborative approach to expand land cultivation, achieve food self-sufficiency, and support local and rural development.
Meftah emphasized the importance of uniting the efforts of relevant ministries, agricultural associations, and local authorities to optimize harvesting methods, ensure fair pricing for farmers and consumers, and explore cost-reduction solutions.
He highlighted the critical role of these entities in addressing flood-related challenges, providing relief to those affected, and ensuring the timely drainage of floodwaters, especially given the heavy rains this year.
Al-Madani reiterated the necessity of holding a follow-up meeting with all concerned parties within two days to establish a unified working mechanism aimed at enhancing agricultural development and minimizing flood disasters.
He also emphasized the religious and national responsibility of local authorities in promoting agricultural growth.
Dr. al-Rubai reviewed ongoing efforts to expand agricultural areas, particularly in Tihama region, through the distribution of seeds and the provision of plowing equipment. He noted that these initiatives have already yielded significant economic returns and called for leveraging this year's heavy rainfall to further support farmers with loans, equipment, and resources.
The Secretary-General of the Agricultural Cooperative Union highlighted the Union's collaborative efforts with the Knights of Development to provide relief to flood victims and promote the expansion of land cultivation, particularly in Tihama region.
Additionally, a team from Bunyan Development Foundation reviewed their initiatives to reduce flood damage, including field surveys and the provision of essential equipment in partnership with local authorities and associations.
