ATHENS August 13. 2024 (Saba) - Greek authorities on Tuesday ordered the evacuation of areas north of the capital Athens in an attempt to combat a forest fire that broke out on Sunday and swept the entire region.
The site quoted "Russia Today" fire officials, saying: The fire spread quickly at night, which led to damage to some homes, and fire crews worked throughout the night to contain the flames, helped by 29 planes to spray water.
Greek officials have warned that extreme heat and other dangerous weather conditions will continue until next Thursday.
A wildfire also broke out in northeastern Spain on Sunday, spreading rapidly due to hot winds.
Both Spain and Greece have suffered severe heatwaves and dry weather this summer, making wildfires so dangerous.
According to authorities, the fires were largely extinguished in the suburbs on Tuesday. But the unusual impact on the more densely populated areas surrounding the capital was a stark reminder of the dangers of climate change, which has caused less rainfall and high temperatures in Greece.
