G7 calls for avoiding escalation in Middle East
[Mon, 05 Aug 2024 21:41:02 +0300]

ROME August 05. 2024 (Saba) - The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven on Sunday expressed their concerns about the escalation of tension in the Middle East, calling on all parties to refrain from any steps that may lead to further escalation in the region.

"We, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven... express our deep concern about the escalation of tension in the Middle East, which threatens to ignite a greater conflict in the region. We once again urge all stakeholders to refrain from escalation," the Group of Seven said in a statement.

The ministers stressed in a joint statement published on the website of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published today: "We must continue to work to prevent retaliatory violence, to ease tensions and take constructive measures to de-escalate."

The statement also stressed that no country will benefit from further escalation in the Middle East.

Tensions have escalated following the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyah in the Iranian capital Tehran and Hezbollah's senior military commander Fouad Shukr in Beirut.

The two assassinations (Haniyah and Shukr) raise serious concerns about a major escalation that could lead to a regional war.
