NEW YORK August 05. 2024 (Saba) - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called on Monday for urgent action to halt the escalating conflict in the Middle East, amid fears of the Gaza war expanding.
In a statement reported by Russia Today, Turk expressed deep concern over the increasing risk of a broader conflict in the region. "I am deeply concerned about the growing risk of a wider conflict in the Middle East," he stated.
Turk urged all parties and influential countries to act swiftly to de-escalate the situation, describing it as extremely dangerous.
He emphasized that human rights and the protection of civilians must be a top priority, noting that civilians, most of whom are women and children, have already endured "unbearable pain and suffering" due to bombings and weaponry over the past ten months.
"Everything must be done, and I mean everything, to avoid this situation sliding into the abyss that will only lead to more horrific consequences for civilians," Turk insisted.
Tensions in the region have been rising since the assassination of Lebanese Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shukr during an air strike on a Beirut suburb on July 30.
This was followed by the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement "Hamas," in Tehran on July 31.
