ABUJA August 04. 2024 (Saba) - The Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday called for an end to protests and to "bloodshed", after at least 13 demonstrators were killed, according to Amnesty International.

Nigeria has witnessed demonstrations with the participation of tens of thousands of people in protest against government policies and the high cost of living.

In a televised speech, Tinubu urged demonstrators to "stop the demonstrations and create space for dialogue" in his first comment on the demonstrations that began on Thursday.

"I heard you clearly. I understand the pain and resentment that is fueling these protests, and I want to assure you of our government's determination to listen to and address the concerns of our citizens," he said.

"We must not allow violence and destruction to tear our nation apart," the president added. "We must stop further bloodshed, violence and destruction."

Tinubu used his speech to defend his record and outline measures he said would benefit Nigeria's youth and the economy.
