WASHINGTON July 21. 2024 (Saba) - The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced an outbreak of listeriosis, also known as Listeria, affecting 12 states simultaneously.
According to the CDC's statement, which was reported by Russian RT channel on Saturday, the outbreak has resulted in two deaths and 28 hospitalizations.
The statement suggests that the actual number of infections may be higher. Although most infected individuals consumed meat products such as mortadella and sausages, there is no confirmed link between these foods and the outbreak at this time.
In Canada, the outbreak has similarly led to two deaths and nine hospitalizations, with all infected individuals reported to have consumed plant-based soft drinks.
Listeriosis is caused by the bacterium *Listeria monocytogenes*, which can be transmitted through contaminated food, including both vegetables and animal products. The infection leads to severe gastrointestinal issues, impacts the nervous system, and can cause serious conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, and death.
Those at higher risk include individuals over the age of 60, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.
