SRINAGAR July 16. 2024 (Saba) - Indian authorities on Tuesday said four soldiers, including an officer, were killed in an attack by gunmen on a patrol in Jammu and Kashmir, in the latest incident of violence in the Hindu-dominated part of the troubled Himalayan region.
The death toll since the beginning of this year has reached 11 soldiers who fell in such attacks, with the center of militant activity shifting in the past few years to the Jammu region of the Kashmir Valley, the Indian authorities said in an official statement.
Indian army officials reported that a gunfight broke out after gunmen ambushed the foot patrol in the Doda forest area late yesterday.
The army explained in a statement that it had transferred additional forces to the area as the operation continued.
The wave of militant attacks aims to return violence to the level that prevailed in the decade of 1995, district Police Chief R.R. Swain told reporters.
Previous militant attacks in the Indian-administered region have often focused on Muslim-dominated Kashmir, and similar attacks in the Jammu region have killed 43 soldiers in the past three years.
