SANA'A June 27. 2024 (Saba) - The Yemeni Olympic Committee in Sana'a has organized a series of sporting events to commemorate World Olympic Day under the theme "Let's Move the World in Preparation for Paris," with the participation of 400 players, both male and female, as well as coaches and supervisors.
National Olympic Committees around the world celebrate Olympic Day annually to honor the founding of the International Olympic Committee in Paris on June 23, 1894. This historic event led to the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
The Olympic Day celebration featured a variety of sporting events, showcasing promising athletes across different disciplines.
Competitions and performances were held in multiple stadiums throughout the capital city of Sana'a. Jamal Al-Jabali, the technical director of the Yemeni Olympic Committee, and the technical committee staff were present at various event venues.
Sports competitions included field tennis, swimming, pencak silat, table tennis, karate, wrestling, judo, fencing, wushu, gymnastics, handball, and athletics for girls.
As part of the celebration, a symposium on the Olympic Movement was organized. Fatima al-Shami, a member of the Olympic Committee's Technical Committee, spoke about the significance of Olympic Day and its commemoration, tracing the establishment of the International Olympic Committee and the history of the modern Olympic Games.
Activities also included a tree planting initiative in the courtyards of the Olympic Center at al-Thawra Sports City in Sana'a, involving participants from the Olympic Day events who engaged in various sports.
In addition to Sana'a, the Yemeni Olympic Committee launched Olympic Day activities in Sayun city on Tuesday, featuring a three-day program with competitions and sports performances in taekwondo, basketball, beach volleyball, and athletics.
