Minister of Transport confirms Yemen's keenness on safety of submarine cables

SANA'A June 26. 2024 (Saba) - Minister of Transport in the caretaker government Abdulwahab al-Durra on Wednesday affirmed the Republic of Yemen’s keenness on the safety of submarine cables for their linking in all technical fields that serve the people.

During his meeting with Acting Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Maritime Affairs Authority, Zaid al-Washli, the Minister of Transport stressed the necessity of cooperation and providing facilities to telecommunications companies that own cables in accordance with international laws, as the Internet is a necessary service for all countries, including Yemen.

He attributed the reason for disrupting the Internet's submarine cables to the presence of American and British military naval vessels in the Red Sea, which are working to support the Zionist enemy in continuing its crimes of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

The Minister of Transport stated that 16 major international communications cables pass through the Red Sea, including four cables in Yemeni territorial waters.

In turn, Acting Chairman of the Maritime Affairs Authority reviewed the facilities provided by the Authority to the cable maintenance company, which applied to the Authority to obtain a license to repair the faults to which the cables were exposed as a result of the presence of American and British military naval vessels in the Red Sea.

He confirmed that the Authority granted permits based on the request of the company that owns international communications cables for two cable maintenance ships (CS ETISALAT-CS NIWA), the first of which completed the marine survey phase, while the other ship will begin delivery and repair during the current week.
