NAIROBI June 26. 2024 (Saba) - A number of Kenyan protesters were killed by police today, Tuesday, in the capital, Nairobi, after protests erupted against a tax increase bill, which sparked widespread anger in the country.
Reuters quoted the Kenyan Human Rights Commission as condemning the police killing of protesters and describing it as "crimes", stressing that such acts are "unacceptable".
The clashes erupted after protesters stormed parliament and the governor's office, setting them on fire.
Eyewitnesses told Reuters that parts of parliament were set on fire after protesters stormed the complex in protest against a set of new taxes, as lawmakers approved the bill.
The agency indicated that "Kenyan police fired live bullets at protesters in Nairobi, protesting against a bill to impose new taxes," according to the Kenyan Human Rights Commission.
“Despite the Kenyan government’s assertion that it respects the right to assembly, human rights monitors are reporting increased use of live ammunition by the national police in the capital, Nairobi,” said Irungu Houghton, the organization’s executive director.
“It is now urgent that doctors are able to safely pass through to treat the wounded,” he added.
A local source said that “at least 50 people were injured by police gunfire and tear gas fired at hundreds of protesters who had gathered at the scene.”
