SANA'A June 10. 2024 (Saba) - Abdullah al-Kebsi, the Minister of Culture in Yemen's caretaker government, on Monday unveiled a groundbreaking project aimed at bolstering handicrafts in Dar al-Hamd in the capital Sana'a.
Spearheaded by the General Administration of Crafts and Handicrafts under the Ministry of Culture, and funded by the General Authority for Small and Micro Enterprise Development, the initiative focuses on advancing skills in agate cutting and polishing, as well as leather craftsmanship.
During the inauguration, attended by officials including Muhammad Haidara, al-Kebsi emphasized the necessity of a national strategy to elevate and safeguard traditional crafts, tapping into Yemen's rich heritage and leveraging local expertise.
Highlighting Yemen's renowned agate and its potential for global markets, Deputy Minister of Culture Haidara underscored the economic opportunities inherent in promoting and exporting this prized resource.
Echoing this sentiment, Ahmed al-Shawtari, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade reiterated the ministry's commitment to supporting artisans, offering services such as trademark registration and market networking to bolster local producers.
The project, as explained by the head of the General Authority for Small and Micro Enterprise Development, aims to empower craftsmen, enhance their skills, and address barriers to their trade, ensuring the sustainability of traditional crafts.
Expanding on the project's scope, Abdulqadus Al-Mutawakel, Director General of Crafts and Handicrafts, detailed the comprehensive training program for forty trainees in agate polishing and leather manufacturing, lauding the support of the General Authority for Small and Micro Enterprise Development in advancing craft-related endeavors.
This initiative, born out of extensive research and assessment, marks a crucial step towards preserving and revitalizing Yemen's cherished crafts, with plans to extend its reach to other regions in the future.
