KHARTOUM June 10. 2024 (Saba) - In a stark warning, the World Food Program has raised concerns over the escalating malnutrition crisis among children in Sudan, reaching distressing levels that have compelled desperate residents to resort to consuming grass and tree leaves.
The United Nations agency, through a statement on its X platform account, emphasized the urgent need to expand its emergency food aid operations, stressing its relentless efforts to swiftly distribute food supplies across the nation.
Highlighting the dire situation, the World Food Program underscored, "Desperation drives Sudanese residents to eat wild grass and tree leaves," signaling the severity of the food insecurity crisis.
Furthermore, the organization drew attention to the alarming rates of malnutrition among Sudanese children, emphasizing the critical need for immediate action.
Echoing these concerns, 19 international humanitarian organizations, including 12 international entities, cautioned against a looming famine in Sudan should the conflicting parties persist in obstructing humanitarian efforts.
In a joint statement reported by the "United Nations News" website, the organizations warned of the dire consequences of impeding rapid and widespread aid delivery, emphasizing the potential for increased fatalities.
The humanitarian coalition urgently appealed to the warring factions to prioritize civilian protection, facilitate humanitarian access, and endorse a nationwide ceasefire.
Sudan, embroiled in a devastating conflict, has witnessed an estimated death toll of 15,000 people and displacement of over eight million, with clashes between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo "Hemedti," amidst significant media neglect.
