BRUSSELS May 28. 2024 (Saba) - The European Union says it has discussed imposing sanctions on Israel if it does not comply with the International Court of Justice ruling requiring it to halt its military operations in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
The EU explained that the proposed sanctions, which were discussed during the meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, include suspending the European Association Agreement with Israel, which gives it economic advantages.
In a related context, some European Union countries demanded that an ultimatum be given to the Prime Minister of the Zionist entity, Benjamin Netanyahu, before proceeding with the application of any sanctions.
Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin said after the ministerial meeting that it was the first time he had witnessed a real discussion on imposing sanctions on Israel during an EU meeting.
Martin added that the ministers agreed on the need for Israel to comply with the provisional measures approved by the International Court of Justice and stop military operations in Rafah, noting that a number of European Union foreign ministers discussed imposing sanctions on Israeli officials who support settlers who commit attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank.
