JAKARTA May 04. 2024 (Saba) - Indonesian authorities have evacuated thousands of people due to the eruption of Mount Ruang volcano, north of Jakarta.
China's official Xinhua news agency quoted the Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency as saying on Tuesday that more than 3,000 people on the neighboring island of Tagulandang east of Ruang volcano have been evacuated to safer places, and navy, civilian and helicopter ships have taken part in the evacuation.
Local authorities have issued tsunami warnings and expected all residents of Tajulandang Island to be evacuated within three days.
The dangerous level of the 725-meter-high Ruang volcano above sea level was raised back to level four, the highest level in the country last Tuesday after volcanic activity increased with orders to evacuate the island to safe areas.
Mount Ruang volcano, located about 100 kilometers from the provincial capital Manado, erupted last month, and its lava flows and hot clouds destroyed property, as well as forests and pastures, while public facilities including schools and the provincial airport were forced to close in the affected areas.
Indonesia, a vast archipelago in Southeast Asia, sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of significant volcanic and seismic activity.
