SANA'A May 04. 2024 (Saba) - The Ministry of Fisheries warned of an environmental disaster as result of the sinking of an oil ship in port of Aden, which is controlled by Transitional Council militia backed by UAE occupation.
The ministry confirmed in a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) the sinking of the dilapidated ship "Coral" in the Al-Mukhtaf area of the port of Aden, causing the leakage of about 100 metric tons of diesel, which may lead to the death of tons of fish and marine life on the coast of Aden.
She considered the sinking of the ship a serious threat to the environment and marine life in the region, and affects the source of food and income for a large category of citizens in Aden.
The Ministry of Fisheries condemned the inaction and disregard of the port management of the shipwreck disaster and the oil spill that followed, and the failure to take any measures so far to avoid its short- and long-term effects on the environment and marine resources.
She pointed out that there are more than 10 other ships dilapidated and threatened with sinking on the coast of Aden, which have become time bombs that threaten the marine environment and infrastructure of the port of Aden, which only serves the ambitions of the UAE occupation.
The ministry called for the need to take the necessary measures to address the oil spill and protect the marine environment in Aden.
She warned of the risk of sinking other ships that threaten to repeat and expand the scale of the disaster and destroy the marine environment.
She called on all activists and media to highlight this danger and the need to act to protect the environment and marine life in the port of Aden.
