RAMALLAH March 04. 2024 (Saba) - The International Federation of Journalists has nominated the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate to receive the UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, which will be awarded next May, in honor of all media professionals in Gaza for their work and sacrifices.
According to the Palestinian News Agency (Wafa), the union said that since the seventh of last October, the occupation has prevented foreign journalists from entering Gaza, and all the voices, words and pictures that were broadcast from the Strip were transmitted by about 1,000 journalists, ten percent of whom lost their lives, and the nomination of the Journalists Syndicate The Palestinians are a tribute to all of them, without exception.
It added that almost everyone lost their loved ones, and despite that, they continued to report, photograph and document what happened to them. No group of journalists paid this high of a price in order to report the news and inform the public. The Syndicate has been, for many years, the defender of freedom of the press and its promotion in Palestine.
Journalists in Gaza suffer from lack of food, water and fuel. Most of them are homeless and struggle to obtain basic necessities such as clothes, bedding and tents, while their death rate is unprecedented.
The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, which was established in 1997 and is awarded every year, aims to a person, organization or institution for making an outstanding contribution to defending or strengthening press freedom in any part of the world, especially if this entails risks.
The award bears this name in honor of the memory of Guillermo Cano Isaza, the Colombian journalist who was assassinated by drug gangs on December 17, 1986 in front of the offices of the newspaper “El Espectator” in Bogotá.
