MELBOURNE February 20. 2024 (Saba)- Australia announced on Tuesday the outlines of a ten-year plan to double its fleet of warships and increase defense spending by an additional seven billion dollars, in the face of an accelerating arms race in the Asia-Pacific.
Agence France-Presse reported that Australia will obtain a naval force consisting of 26 combat surface ships.
The agency quoted Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles as saying: This is the largest fleet we will have since the end of World War II, and the Australian Navy must be able to ensure the safety of our shipping routes.
It is noteworthy that Australia will build six Hunter-class frigates, 11 multi-role frigates, and six modern warships that do not require a crew, and a number of ships will be equipped with Tomahawk missiles capable of carrying out long-range strikes.
