NEW YORK October 26. 2023 (Saba) - The UN Security Council has failed to adopt a US draft resolution that does not call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
According to Russia Today, Russia and China used their veto power and thwarted the US draft resolution in the Security Council.
Any draft needs nine votes, out of 15, to be adopted by the Security Council, provided that none of the permanent member states uses a veto.
The United States presented to the UN Security Council a draft resolution on the escalation between the Zionist entity and Palestine that condemns Hamas movement and recognizes the right of the occupying entity to defend itself, and does not call for a ceasefire.
The US draft resolution stated that the Security Council “unambiguously rejects and condemns the brutal terrorist attack committed by Hamas and other terrorist groups, which occurred in “Israel” since October 7.”
The US draft resolution also affirms Israel's established right to self-defense individually and collectively, and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages "held by Hamas" and respect for international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.
Russia had previously distributed a draft resolution in the Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone.
The draft also strongly condemns acts of violence and hostilities against civilians and all terrorist acts, but the Security Council met it with rejection.
The UN Security Council also failed, after the United States used its veto, to adopt a Brazilian draft resolution requiring the cessation of Zionist orders to evacuate the residents of the northern Gaza Strip to its south, and calling for a humanitarian truce and the establishment of safe corridors.
