PARIS October 05.2023 (Saba) - France's chiefs of staff announced on Thursday that they would begin withdrawing their forces from Niger this week, meaning before Sunday, with the operation to be completed by the end of the year.
AFP reported that the withdrawal of French military forces stationed in Niger "will begin this week", as announced by the French Staff Command Thursday in a statement today.
President Emmanuel Macron had previously stated that the last French soldiers would leave the impoverished sub-Saharan African country by the end of this year.
In its statement, the Chiefs of Staff wrote: "We will initiate this week's withdrawal process, on a regular and safe basis, in cooperation with Nigerians."
