RABAT September 09. 2023 (Saba) - Morocco's Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday morning that more than 632 people had been killed and more than 329 injured by last night's devastating earthquake.
Moroccan State Television quoted the Ministry as saying: This tally is still favourable to increase at any moment in the coming hours, and the rescue of missing and suspected persons from the earthquake continues.
Casualties were recorded in the provinces and prefectures of Al Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudan.
A local official said: Most of the deaths were in difficult-to-reach mountainous areas.
The National Institute of Geophysics in Morocco reported that an earthquake measuring seven on the Richter scale was recorded in Al Haouz Province, in the center of the country, at 11:00 pm on Friday, Moroccan time.
The institute indicated that aftershocks following the earthquake that struck Morocco could continue, adding: “It is expected that aftershocks will continue for a few days or a few weeks before they disappear,” according to local media.
Pictures and videos posted by Internet users on various social networking sites showed the wreckage of homes in the alleys of Marrakesh, and cars damaged by falling stones.
The health authorities in Marrakesh appealed to citizens to donate blood to save those injured in the strong earthquake that struck the south of the country, leaving hundreds dead and wounded.
