NIAMEY Aug. 14. 2023 (Saba) - head of Niger's military Abderrahmane Tiane has agreed to start talks with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Sputnik news agency quoted new Prime Minister of Niger Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine as saying that "the new leadership in Niger is" optimistic "about the start of talks with the" ECOWAS "in the coming days."
On Sunday, a delegation of Nigerian religious scholars announced an agreement with the leaders of the military council in Niger to intensify dialogue to resolve the crisis peacefully.
The Nigerian delegation quoted the leader of the military council in Niger as saying that "the doors are open for diplomacy and peace and apologized for not paying the delegation sent by the President of Nigeria the necessary attention.
The delegation of Nigerian religious scholars called for "dialogue and not the use of force to resolve the Niger crisis," at the end of a visit to Niamey.
Head of the military council in Niger General Abderrahmane Tiane had met in Niamey with a delegation of scholars and heads of religious institutions from Nigeria.
According to "RTN" channel, General Tiane demanded, during the meeting, to lift the sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Niger, according to the channel.
The channel quoted the new Prime Minister of Niger as saying that the head of state asked them (the religious leaders) to explain everything that "we would like to see in the coming days, that is, to cancel these inhumane ... unacceptable measures," adding that "the new authorities in Niger is open to mediation efforts to end the crisis in the country.
