GENEVA July 10. 2023 (SABA) - On Monday, Switzerland urged the world's nations not to use cluster munitions, following the announcement by the United States of the commencement of the supply of this internationally prohibited weapon to Ukraine.
And the website (Russia Today) quoted a spokesman for the Swiss Foreign Ministry, Pierre-Alain Ellinger, in a statement as saying: "Switzerland has been informed of the measures taken by the United States, and as a State party to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, it supports the prohibition of these weapons."
Ellinger added: "It calls on all States not to use them. Indiscriminate or disproportionate attacks are prohibited and constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law. "
On July 7, US President Joe Biden announced his decision to begin delivering cluster munitions to the Kyiv regime, with Russia's official Foreign Ministry representative, Maria Zakharova, stressing that such supplies endanger civilians and aim to prolong the crisis.
Cluster munitions are considered to be without self-destructive devices, and according to the United States military, 5 per cent to 14% of these munitions may not explode at all, as they have been in warehouses for a long time. In this case, mines will threaten the civilian population even after the end of the conflict.
